This Clinical Update in Obesity Medicine was originally delivered on May 11, 2023 at the SGIM23 Annual Meeting in Denver.

Over 40% of U.S. adults are estimated to have obesity.  Adults with obesity are 2-3 times more likely to have multi-morbidity, which leads to increased healthcare utilization in both inpatient and outpatient settings where internal medicine providers are frequently involved in their care.  It is therefore essential for internists to remain up-to-date on available obesity treatment options.  The field of obesity medicine is growing rapidly.

The presenters provide an update on seminal articles lifestyle treatment/counseling, obesity pharmacotherapy, bariatric procedures, and obesity-related medical education.   Presenters emphasize strategies for translating these findings into clinial practice using cases from their own experiences as obesity medicine physicians and educators.
