This Clinical Update in Dementia Care and Prevention was originally delivered on May 11, 2023 at the SGIM23 Annual Meeting in Denver.
Since the passage of the National Alzheimer's Project Act in 2011 that increased NIH funding for dementia related research, the evidence base on diagnosis and care of persons with dementia has grown substantially. In the last two years, several new studies have come out about prevention of dementia in middle age and older adult populations, management of other chronic conditions in the setting of dementia, emerging diagnositcs and therapeutics moving into clinical practice, and health services intervention to improve dementia care. This presentation reviews the most recent evidence pertaining to dementia prevention and the care of the older adult with dementia that is relevant to the practicing general internist practicing in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Authors have conducted a systematic review of the medical literature to identify articles that have the greatest impact on the prevention and clinical care of older adults with dementia. Articles are selected for presentation based on the quality of the study, relevance to common problems encountered in clinical care, and the potential to change clinical practice.
